Guardamar del Segura is the nearest seaside town to my office in Benijófar, and one of the prettiest on this stretch of coast.
Where is Guardamar?
Guardamar sits on the coast about 30 km south of Alicante, where the River Segura meets the sea. Alicante airport is usually around 30 minutes away by car, Torrevieja 10 to 15 minutes, and Ciudad Quesada, Rojales and Benijófar about 15 minutes inland.
Beaches, dunes and pine forest
Guardamar’s big draw is its coastline: around 11 km of sandy beaches, backed by dunes and a large pine forest. The forest was planted more than a hundred years ago to stop the dunes from moving into the town, and today it’s a protected natural area, crossed by shady paths that are perfect for walking and cycling. Right next to the town centre are two pine parks, Parque Reina Sofía and Parque Alfonso XIII.
The town itself is lively, with a good choice of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants, and it stays busy all year round rather than closing down after the summer.
What kind of property can you buy?
Close to the beach you’ll mostly find apartments, many with sea views and communal pools. Further back, and on the hills above the town, there are townhouses, bungalows and detached villas. Guardamar is popular with holiday-home buyers, people moving out for good and people looking for a property to rent out.
