Torrevieja is the biggest town on this part of the Costa Blanca, about 20 minutes from my office in Benijófar.
Where is Torrevieja?
Torrevieja is on the coast in the south of Alicante province, between Guardamar del Segura to the north and the Orihuela Costa to the south. Alicante airport is usually 40 to 45 minutes away by car.
The salt lakes and the sea
Torrevieja is known for its two salt lakes, which form the Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja natural park. The larger lake, the Laguna Salada de Torrevieja, often turns pink in the warmer months, and salt is still produced there today. The park has walking and cycling trails and is a good place to see flamingos and other birds.
The town has several beaches, including the long La Mata beach to the north and Playa de los Locos close to the centre, as well as a seafront promenade lined with bars and restaurants.
Living in Torrevieja
Because it’s a real town rather than a resort, Torrevieja has everything you need all year round: supermarkets, shopping centres, markets, sports facilities and the University Hospital of Torrevieja. It has a large international community, and you’ll hear many different languages on the promenade.
What kind of property can you buy?
Torrevieja has a huge choice of apartments, from small flats in town to sea-view penthouses, along with bungalows, townhouses and detached villas in areas such as La Mata, Los Balcones, Aguas Nuevas and La Siesta. It’s often one of the more affordable places to buy on the coast, which makes it popular with first-time buyers in Spain and with investors.
